MMC Russ Cline - May 24th 1935 - August 24th 2009

Chief Machinist’s Mate (Submarines), USN(RET) Russ “Pappy” Cline, 74, of 1851 Middleton St., Orangeburg departed on Eternal Patrol on Monday, Aug. 24, 2009 at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia.


Russ was born May 24, 1935, in Morristown, N.J., the son of Margaret E.
Clark Gaffney and the late Ralph Gaffney. 

Russ qualified in USS Blueback (SS 581) and served in USS Sterlet (SS 392), USS Bonefish (SS 581), USS Tecumseh (SSBN 628), USS Tunny (SS/SSG/APSS/LPSS 282), USS Perch (SS/APSS 313), and USS John C. Calhoun (SSBN 630), retiring after 22 years of service.


Russ was a Life Member of the United States Submarine Veteran’s
Incorporated, member of the Charleston Base, Palmetto Base Plank owner and served as the Palmetto Base Treasurer.

Survivors include his wife, Judith A. Cline of the home; three children,
Karl R. Cline of Summerville, Mrs. Troy (Linda) D. Corbett of Orangeburg,
Maj. Kevin R. Cline of Fort Riley, Kan.; his mother, Mrs. Margaret E.
Clark Gaffney; nine grandchildren; and brother, John Gaffney; and a number
of nieces and nephews.

Russ is interned at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Section 2, Site 525.

Russ’ kindness, dedication and thoughtfulness of others will be sorely missed!!!!!
